What we collect from this website, how we handle it, and what we don’t do with it.

Our privacy statement

Here at Ghan House in Medieval Carlingford we understand that privacy is an important issue. The following is designed to help you understand what information we collect from this site, and how we’ll handle and use that information after that.

Data controller: Ghan House, Carlingford, Co. Louth, Ireland. Email: info@ghanhouse.com. Tel: +353 (0)42 937 3682.

General enquiries

If you contact us with a general enquiry, you may need to provide us with personal information (for example, contact details). We will use that personal information to respond to your enquiry and track further correspondence. Personal information collected is not used for any other purpose.

Information collection and use

Ghan House is the sole owner of any information collected on this site. We will not sell, share, or rent this information to anyone else not associated with the business carried out at Ghan House.

The Ghan House website may collect information from you at numerous points across the site — through our contact form, the booking widget, the Contact Form 7 plugin, and via any cookies our consent solution accepts on your behalf.

What personal data we collect

Depending on how you interact with this site, we may collect some or all of the following categories of personal data:

  • Contact enquiries: name, email address, phone number, and the content of your message.
  • Bookings: name, email address, phone number, postal address, arrival and departure dates, number of guests, and any special requirements you share with us (such as dietary needs or accessibility requirements).
  • Website usage data: IP address, browser type, pages visited, and time spent on pages — collected via analytics cookies where you have given consent.

Legal basis for processing

We only process your personal data where we have a lawful basis for doing so under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The basis we rely on depends on the purpose:

  • Contact and general enquiries: legitimate interests — responding to your enquiry is necessary for our legitimate business purposes, and we have balanced this against your privacy rights.
  • Bookings: performance of a contract — processing is necessary to take steps at your request before entering into, and to fulfil, a booking contract with you.
  • Analytics and non-essential cookies: consent — we only set these after you have actively accepted them via our cookie consent banner.

How long we keep your data

We do not keep your personal data for longer than is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected. As a general guide:

  • General enquiry correspondence is retained for up to two years from the date of last contact.
  • Booking records are retained for seven years to comply with our legal and tax obligations under Irish law.
  • Analytics data is retained in accordance with the data retention settings of the analytics platform in use, and only for as long as your cookie consent remains valid.

Cookies

There are two types of cookies:

  • The traditional ones we make in our kitchen and bring to your bedroom with a cup of tea or coffee when you arrive.
  • And computer cookies — which are very different: small text files that this website transfers to your browser for added functionality or to track site usage. We may use these to understand the paths visitors take on our site and to recognise repeat visitors. We do not use cookies to gather personally identifying information like your name or email address.

You can manage your cookie preferences at any time using the “Cookie Settings” button at the bottom of the page. Full details of the cookies we use are set out in our Cookie Policy.

External links

This site may link out to others (our booking partner, social media, suppliers, local activity providers). Ghan House is not responsible for the privacy policies or practices of those other sites. Please read the privacy statement on any site that collects personally identifying information from you. This statement applies solely to information collected by this site.

Third-party widgets and embeds

Some pages on this site embed third-party content — a Google Maps iframe on the Contact page, YouTube videos on the Weddings page (via youtube-nocookie.com), and the booking engine on the Book a Room flow. Each of those services has its own privacy policy and may set its own cookies, governed by your choices in the cookie consent banner.

Where third-party services process your data on our behalf, they do so as data processors under a written agreement, and are only permitted to use your data for the purposes we specify. Some of these services (including Google) may transfer data outside the European Economic Area. Where this occurs, we rely on appropriate safeguards — such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses — to ensure your data remains protected.

Your rights

Under GDPR and the Irish Data Protection Acts, you have the following rights in relation to your personal data:

  • Right of access: you may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification: you may ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Right to erasure: in certain circumstances, you may ask us to delete your personal data.
  • Right to restriction: you may ask us to restrict the processing of your data in certain circumstances.
  • Right to data portability: where processing is based on your consent or a contract, you may ask us to provide your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
  • Right to object: you may object to processing based on our legitimate interests at any time. We will stop processing unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at info@ghanhouse.com. We will respond within one month. If you are not satisfied with our response, or believe we are processing your data unlawfully, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Commission (DPC), the supervisory authority for data protection in Ireland: www.dataprotection.ie, Lo Call: 0818 114 000.

Withdrawing consent

Where we rely on your consent as the legal basis for processing your personal data (for example, in relation to non-essential cookies), you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time. You can do this using the “Cookie Settings” button at the bottom of this page, or by contacting us directly. Withdrawing consent will not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before you withdrew it.

Changes to this policy

We may, from time to time, make changes to this policy. We recommend re-visiting it occasionally to learn of new privacy practices or changes. The version on this page is the current one.
